Fred Grant was the oldest son of Ulysses S. Grant and Julia Dent. General Grant sent his son to West Point in 1866, where young Fred was implicated in a hazing incident which involved the mistreatment of the first black cadet, James Webster Smith. Fred was still allowed to graduate in 1871, 37th out of a class of 41. In 1874 he married Ida Marie Honore, the daughter of H. H. Honore and the sister of millionaire Mrs. Bertha Potter Palmer, in Chicago.
