The launching technique devised by the Wrights involved a six-foot sectioned rail (nicknamed by them "Junction Railroad"). The skids of the machine were laid on a truck that could run freely along the rail on two small tandem wheels. The machine was restrained until the engine was ready, and then released, sliding down the rail until it gained sufficient speed to lift up from the truck and fly.
