Ira Aldridge (1807-1867)

African American actor from New York City who received most of his critical acclaim as a Shakespearian actor in Europe and became a naturalized British subject of Queen Victoria in 1863. Aldridge's name is inscribed at the Shakespeare Memorial Theater, Stratford-upon-Avon.
