David Wills (1831-1894)

David Wills was the prominent Gettysburg attorney and judge who was in charge of the Gettysburg Cemetery dedication in November, 1863. The thirty-two-year-old Republican had purchased, on behalf of the state of Pennsylvania, seventeen acres for a cemetery to honor those who had fallen at the battle of Gettysburg the previous summer. The Wills House was the largest house on the town square, and Lincoln stayed there overnight before delivering the Gettysburg Address.
