William Dunlap (1766-1839)

As a playwright, William Dunlap wrote about thirty plays, adapting English theatrical tastes for the American stage. He translated the same number of French and German plays, producing them in the theaters he managed in New York City. But many times he was forced to turn to his other talent: painting. He began with miniatures but was more successful with large show pictures. He taught at the National Academy of Design for several years. In his later life he became an historian, writing important books on American theater history and on design.
