John Wanamaker (1838-1922)
John Wanamaker was an American retailer who developed the modern department store. He established his own firm, John Wanamaker and Company, in 1869. He merchandised goods in distinct departments and publicized his stores through extensive advertising. Wanamaker was the postmaster general under Benjamin Harrison.
