John Marshall (1755-1835)
This is a portrait of the Chief Justice under whose leadership the Supreme Court evolved into a far more powerful institution than it had been in 1801 when he became Chief Justice. It successfully assumed its function as the interpreter and guardian of the Constitution and as the arbiter of conflicts arising from the clash of federal and state sovereignties.
