Grant in the Ring

This unusual carte de visite shows the heads of many prominent figures in a ring and as spectators in what is a satire of current events. President Ulysses S. Grant throws the newspaperman Horace Greeley off his horse in a joust which is probably a reference to the newspaper coverage of the many political scandals of his presidency and perhaps the death of Greeley in 1872.
