Kate Reignolds (1836-1911)

Born in England to Wellington's aide-de-camp, Catherine Mary "Kate" Reignolds was an actress. At age fourteen she traveled to the U.S. and began playing children's parts in the West. Thanks to Edwin Forrest, the Broadway Theatre in New York engaged Reignolds and she made her debut as Virginia to Forrest's Virginius. The actress then became a great favorite with the Chambers Street Theatre and Laura Keene's Theatre. Reignolds debuted in England in 1868 at the Princess's Theatre in London, as Donna Violante in "The Wonder." She quickly returned to the U.S. where she starred throughout the country. The actress married the actor Henry Farren in 1857, was widowed in 1860, and then wed Erving Winslow (1839-1922), secretary of the Anti-Imperialist League in the U.S. This is a hand-painted carte de visite portrait of Reignolds in costume, holding a lyre. This photograph was taken by J. W. Black in Boston. Miss Reignolds appeared there at the Boston Museum Theater.
