Isabella Hinkley (1840-1862) and Signor Susini
Isabella Hinckley was a soprano who made her NY debut as Lucia at the New York Academy of Music in 1861. Hinckley was famous for her performances in "Il Trovatore," "Il Barbiere di Siviglia," and "Il Ballo in Maschera." President Lincoln attended a performance in February, 1861, and when Hinckley sang the "Star-Spangled Banner," he rose to his feet. Hinckley married Signor Susini, one of the great opera singers of the 1850s and 60s. He made his American debut in 1854 in "Lucrezia Borgia" at the Castle Garden in New York, and starred for many opera seasons at the New York Academy of Music. Both singers died tragically, she in childbirth and he when hit by a cab in London. Hinckley poses here in costume for "Il Ballo in Maschera" at the Mathew Brady studio.
