The Meeting at Major General A. J. Smith's Union Headquarters
This pencil drawing depicts Confederate officers - General John Bowen and Colonel Montgomery of General John Pemberton's brigade while at General Smith's Vicksburg headquarters. They were received under a flag of truce to negotiate the surrender of Vicksburg on July 3, 1863. The meeting resulted in the subsequent meeting of Grant and Pemberton and the surrender of the city on July 4, 1863. Also depicted is Union General Stephen Burbridge. The original drawing was done by Captain J. W. Ross of Burbridge's 13th Brigade, Company F.
