USS Essex
James B. Ead built this ironclad river gunboat by converting it from a snag-boat in January of 1862. It became part of the Western Gunboat Flotilla on the Mississippi River. After it was badly damaged in the 1862 attack on Fort Henry, it was repaired and upgraded into one of the most powerful ironclads in the Western rivers.
