Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877)
Cornelius Vanderbilt, an American railroad magnate, is shown here around 1850. He connected New York City with Chicago by rail in 1873. Vanderbilt left $100 million to his son. He also left $1 million to found Vanderbilt University.
