John C. Heenan (1835-1873)

Heenan was a well-known American prize fighter whose nickname was the "Benicia Boy." He was married for a few years to actress Adah Isaacs Menken whom he abandoned when she was pregnant. In 1860, Heenan fought a famous boxing match with the British champion Tom Sayers which sparked an intense British/American nationalistic athletic rivalry. He is shown here in a cabinet card by J. Wood of 208 Bowery in New York City.
