Jem Mace (1831-1910)

Jem Mace was a clever boxer who is known as the "Father of Modern Boxing." He probably had the greatest influence upon boxing during the pre-1900 era. Mace traveled all over the world teaching boxing and conducting tournaments. He is shown here in his stance in a cabinet card by J. Wood of 208 Bowery in New York City.
