Rutledge Tavern

Abraham Lincoln spent six years of his early adult life in the town of New Salem. He came to the town when in 1831 at the age of 22 and left in 1837. This is a restored version of a common room in the tavern that James Rutledge, a native South Carolinian who co-founded New Salem, erected originally as a residence, but converted to a tavern as the town began to prosper.
