Alonzo Jacob Ransier (1834-1882)

Alonzo Jacob Ransier was a leading figure in Reconstruction and Republican politics in South Carolina. He was elected South Carolina's first black lieutenant governor in 1870 and served as a U.S. Congressman from 1873-75. He was an advocate of women's suffrage and an opponent of segregation in public education.
