James Martin Peebles (1822-1922)

James Martin Peebles was a teacher, clergyman, and doctor who was active in the anti-slavery, temperance, and women's suffrage movements. He was a member of the American Indian Peace Commission, a delegate to several international peace conferences, and was appointed by President Grant to serve as Consul to Turkey in 1869. Dr. Peebles was also an author and a world traveler who became a leader in the worldwide spiritualist movement of the 19th century.
