"The First Vote

" African-American men stand in line placing their ballots in glass bowls as a white man oversees the process in this illustration by Alfred R. Waud from the November 16th, 1867 issue of Harper's Weekly. The men are dressed in clothes indicative of their profession. The first man is a laborer with a mallet in his pocket, the second man is dressed in a fine suit, and the third man is a soldier in uniform.
