Blanche Kelso Bruce (1841-1898)
Blanche Kelso Bruce was an African-American senator from Mississippi during the Reconstruction era. Bruce opposed America's Chinese exclusion policy and spoke for civil rights and against election fraud. He was a slave at the beginning of the Civil War who left his master and then attended Oberlin College. He was later the registrar of the U.S. Treasury.
