Elihu Benjamin Washburne (1816-1887)

Elihu Benjamin Washburne was a U.S. congressman from Illinois from 1853-69 and was appointed secretary of state in the cabinet of President Grant, but resigned a few days afterward to accept a diplomatic mission to France. Washburne was the only foreign minister in Paris who continued at his post during the Franco-Prussian War. This carte de visite photograph was taken by Paul Berthier while Washburne was in Paris.
