Edmund Pendleton Gaines (1777-1849)
Edmund Pendleton Gaines was an American military officer who fought in the War of 1812, both Seminole Wars, and the Black Hawk War. Although he was stubborn and often feuded with superiors, he was a military professional with a vision for frontier development. The city of Gainesville, Florida, was so named in his honor.
