Albert Gallatin (1761-1849)
Albert Gallatin was the secretary of the treasury under President Thomas Jefferson. He served briefly in the U.S. Senate and as a U.S. congressman from Pennsylvania. Gallatin also helped negotiate the end of the War of 1812 and served as American ambassador to France. He was one of the founders and the first president of the council of the University of the City of New York. This engraving was made from a painting by Alonzo Chappel.
