John White Geary (1819-1873)
John White Geary organized regiments to fight in the Mexican War and the Civil War and fought gallantly in both wars achieving the rank of brevet major general. In between the wars he held several political offices. After the Mexican War he served as the first mayor of San Francisco and before the Civil War he was the governor of Kansas in the midst of violence between proslavery and antislavery factions. After the Civil War he was governor of his home state of Pennsylvania.
