William Jay Gaynor (1848-1913)
William Jay Gaynor was elected to the New York Supreme Court in 1893 and appointed to the Appellate Division, Second Department in 1905. His reputation as an honest reformer helped win him election as mayor of New York City in 1909. Early in his first term, Gaynor was shot in the throat by a discharged city employee, the only New York City mayor to suffer an assassination attempt.
