Alvin Cullem Gillem (1830-1875)
Alvin Cullem Gillem was a Tennessean who remained loyal to the Union during the Civil War. He graduated from West Point in 1851 and served in artillery duty in Florida and on the Texas frontier. He was promoted to major general of volunteers for his war service. After the war he got into trouble with the Radical Republicans in Congress over his lenient treatment of ex-rebels as commander of the occupation of Mississippi and Arkansas.
