Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore (1829-1892)

Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore was the most celebrated bandmaster of the second half of the nineteenth century. Gilmore was born in Ireland, but moved to the United States because of the limited musical opportunities in Ireland. Gilmore staged several monster concerts, the first of which took place in New Orleans in March of 1864 and featured a 500-piece band, a chorus of 6,000 children, a battery of fifty cannons fired on signal, forty soldiers striking anvils, and the simultaneous ringing of all church bells in the city.
