William Gilpin (1815-1894)
William Gilpin attended West Point, but he dropped out after only eight months. Gilpin then fought in the Seminole War and the Mexican War. In 1843 he headed west as a member of Captain John Fremont's expedition. He was appointed the first governor of Colorado by Lincoln in 1861 and raised the 1st Colorado Volunteers who won a critical Union victory at Glorietta Pass in 1862.
