"Sacramento City, Ca. from the foot of J. Street, showing I., J., & K. Sts. with the Sierra Nevada in the distance"
This view of Sacramento was drawn by the artist, George Victor Cooper, on December 20th, 1849. The discovery of gold in 1848 at nearby SutterÂ’s Mill (now Coloma) led to the establishment of the town, and in 1854 it was made the state capital.
