James Hammond (1807-1864)
James Hammond was an American politician and wealthy plantation owner who was an early advocate of Southern secession. He was a U.S. Congressman from 1835-36 and a governor of South Carolina from 1842-44. In 1857 he was elected to the U.S. Senate.
