"An Available Candidate. The One Qualification for a Whig President"

The available candidate referred to is probably General Winfield Scott, but may be General Zachary Taylor. The figure in the cartoon has traditionally been identified as Taylor, but may be a contemporary representation of Scott, in which case the print would have appeared sometime in the few months of popular support for Scott preceding the Whig party's convention in Philadelphia, in June 1848. In these months, both were contenders for the Whig candidacy. The figure in question sits atop a pyramid of skulls, holding a bloodstained sword. The skulls and sword allude to the highly successful Mexican War campaigns waged by both Taylor and Scott. The cartoon is an attack on Whig principles.
