John Quincy Adams (1767-1848)

He was the sixth president of the United States and the first son of a president to attain the office. He also served as secretary of state under James Monroe, becoming the chief architect of the Monroe Doctrine. He is the only ex-president ever to serve in the House of Representatives. He served in Congress for seventeen years, becoming the most passionate and respected liberal voice in Washington. This 1846 hand-colored lithograph portrays Adams in the last years of his life while he was in Congress. It was engraved by P. S. Duval after a painting by A. Newsam.
