Charles Francis Adams (1807-1886)

Charles Francis Adams was the son of Louisa Catherine and John Quincy Adams. He was a well-respected politician and diplomat who served in the Massachusetts state legislature and in the U.S. House of Representatives (1859-61). As the United States minister to Britain during the Civil War, Adams successfully lobbied the British to keep them from officially recognizing the Confederacy. This portrait of John Quincy Adams' son was painted by Charles Bird King in 1827 when Adams was just twenty years old.
