The caption also features Adams' last words "This is the end of earth, I am content." This lithograph was engraved and published by Currier & Ives in 1848. Adams is the only former president to serve in the House of Representatives. He served in Congress for seventeen years, from 1831 until his death in 1848, earning the nickname "Old Man Eloquent." Adams suffered a stroke on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives.
