In this engraving, Johnson stands looking towards the right. His right hand rests on some papers on a desk. The Capital can be seen in the background. Johnson became the seventeenth president after Lincoln was assassinated, on April 15, 1865, and remained in office until the end of the term, in 1869. This is a mezzotint engraved by William Sartain.
