"President Lincoln and His Cabinet. Reading of the Emancipation Proclamation"
This engraving was made from the well-known 1864 painting by Francis Bicknell Carpenter (1830-1900). Carpenter spent six months in the White House while making the painting, and also made several other paintings of Lincoln at other times. The cabinet members are seated around a table. From left to right, they are: President Abraham Lincoln; Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of Treasury; William H. Seward, Secretary of State; Montgomery Blair, Postmaster General; Gideon Welles, Secretary of the Navy; Edwin M. Stanton, Secretary of War; Caleb B. Smith, Secretary of Interior; Edward Bates, Attorney General.
