President Andrew Johnson at an Outdoor Luncheon
This luncheon took place during his 1866 "Swing Around the Circle" Tour when President Johnson undertook a speaking tour of the north. The tour took him north to upstate New York, west to Chicago, south to St. Louis, and then back to Washington via the Ohio Valley. In addition to visiting large cities, the presidential tour stopped at numerous small towns. Johnson was accompanied by Secretary of State William H. Seward, Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles, General Ulysses S. Grant and Admiral David G. Farragut.
