"The Rebound of the Ball"
This political cartoon satirizes the Democrats' defeat in the 1838 fall New York state elections which the cartoonist views as a referendum rejecting President Martin Van Buren's independent treasury, or "Sub-treasury" system. Van Buren is seen asleep in a giant ball labeled "sub-treasury" which is being pushed downhill by Whig gubernatorial candidate William H. Seward. The ball rolls onto the defeated incumbent Democratic Governor William Marcy (with a 50 cents patch on his trousers) and Senator Thomas Hart Benton.
