Prominent Candidates For the Republican Presidential Nomination at Chicago
On May 12, 1861, just before the Republican Convention, Harper's Weekly published this spread of the "prominent candidates." William Seward appeared in the center, as the front-runner among the other candidates which included Nathaniel P. Banks, William Pennington, Salmon P. Chase, McLean, Simon Cameron, John C. Fremont, Abraham Lincoln, John Bell, and Cassius Marcellus Clay.
