Martin Van Buren, Eighth President of the United States

This engraved portrait of Martin Van Buren holding a book was published by D. W. Kellogg c. 1840. Van Buren was a shrewd politician from New York, the first president born an American citizen. His idea for an independent treasury was the central accomplishment of his presidency.
