"A Burial Party"

"A Burial Party, Cold Harbor, Virginia, April, 1865." In the foreground of this photograph, a wheelbarrow is loaded with the limbs and skulls of unburied Union soldiers killed at Cold Harbor. The wheelbarrow is stationed in the middle of a large grassy field surrounded by distant trees in the background. Behind the wheelbarrow, three black men dig graves. This photograph was taken by John Reekie, circa 1865.
