Unfinished Confederate Grave

Three South Carolina soldiers, their bodies marked by boards, rest in the foreground of this photograph. Behind the open grave is a barn surrounded by a broken white fence. The scene was photographed by Timothy O'Sullivan on July 5 or 6, 1863, just as Alexander Gardner's team found it.
