"Joseph Cinquez, the brave Congolese Chief who prefers death to Slavery and now lives in jail.. "

Cinquez was the leader of the slave rebellion on the Spanish ship Amistad. This engraved portrait of Cinquez included a copy of his speech to his comrade slaves after the captain had been murdered and the slaves had gained possession of the vessel. The lithograph was engraved in 1839 by either Joseph or Isaac Sheffield.
