"Independence Declared 1776"
This 1839 print commemorates the Declaration of Independence and the American Revolution with pro-Democratic overtones. The first eight U.S. presidents, from George Washington to Martin Van Buren, are shown under a banner with the words "Independence declared 1776; the Union Must Be Preserved." Thirteen soldiers representing the original thirteen colonies face George Washington, who is flanked by the Marquis de Lafayette and General Joseph Warren on the columns to the right and left.
