Tenure of Office Act, Page 1
It was the violation of the Tenure of Office Act which enabled Congress to start impeachment proceedings against President Andrew Johnson. Starting in 1867, Johnson made attempts to remove the Secretary of War Edwin Stanton from office, largely because of differences over reconstruction policy. These attempts led to Johnson's impeachment. The act had been passed on March 2, 1867.
