"The Bombardment of Tripoli"
This Currier and Ives color lithograph of the 1804 bombardment of Tripoli was published in 1846. In 1804, President Jefferson sent the U.S. Navy to blockade the Barbary coast to prevent Tripoli from extorting protection money from ships seeking safe passage in the Mediterranean.
