"Burning of the Frigate Philadelphia in the Harbour of Tripoli, 16th February, 1804, by 70 Gallant Tars of Columbia commanded by Lieutenant Decatur"

In 1804, the U.S. Navy was sent to blockade the Barbary coast to prevent Tripoli from extorting protection money from ships seeking safe passage in the Mediterranean. After the Tripolitans captured the Philadelphia, the Navy sent Decatur and his crew to scuttle the ship. This aquatint was engraved by F. Kearny, circa 1804-08.
