1816 Map of the United States

This is a map of the United States and the contiguous British and Spanish Possessions by John Melish. This map shows the nation just prior to the Missouri Compromise. The Compromise drew a line west from the line separating Kentucky and Tennessee. Territory south of the line could become slave states; territory north of it would remain free. The only exception was to be the new slave state of Missouri, balanced by the new free state of Maine.
