This colored wood engraving depicts Major George Washington in a canoe descending the Ohio River in 1753. He was on a mission from the Ohio Company of Virginia to warn the French against interfering with their plans to colonize the Ohio valley. This is an illustration from the 1859 book The Illustrated Life of George Washington by J. T. Headley.
