Colonel John Harris (1790-1864)
John Harris was a career soldier who joined the U.S. Marines during the War of 1812. He subsequently served as a "Horse Marine" in the Seminole Wars and in the Mexican War. As the Colonel Commander of the U. S. Marine Corps (1859-1864) during the Civil War, he reported directly to the secretary of the Navy, Gideon Welles.
